US is getting ready to use B-2 Bombers against Iran. Are the Russian and Chinese getting ready to test their new weapons against it?

As the gossip of the US getting ready to Bomb Iran with B-2 bombers floats around, the question that comes to mind is whether Russia/China will see this as an opportunity to test their "theoretically capable" weapons against the B-2 Bombers.

In one of the articles in 2022 regarding the war in Ukraine, we had argued that Ukraine would become a testing ground for Russia's new military means and methods, as well as those of the US.

Any war inevitably becomes a testing ground for the superpowers with military industries and new technological weapons. No superpower would or could pass up the chance to test its new technological military means and methods in a war zone. In this sense, in addition to the fact that the question of Iran can easily, and possibly be turned into an existential question for both, it is an opportunity for both. Especially for China, Iran is a great field to test its newly developed military weapons and ammunition in a real war.

This is not and cannot be an objective assumption, for there could not be any available documentation for it. However, based on the logical inference, the assumption is not only reasonable but almost unavoidable.

If we accept the foundational assumption, we can deconstruct the scenario to see why the presence of Russian and Chinese weapons and professionals on the ground in Iran is a logical conclusion.

A war zone provides data that a training ground or simulation never can: such as data on lethality, reliability, and effectiveness under the extreme stress of electronic warfare, jamming, and enemy tactics. They cannot rely solely on Iranian operators drafting reports on the tests. They need their own engineers and technicians on-site to recover black boxes from downed systems, adjust software parameters in real-time, and visually confirm damage assessments.

It is standard practice in military alliances and proxy conflicts to embed advisors. The term "training" is the publicly acceptable term for what is often a combined operation. If Russia and/or China actually supplied Iran with a new generation of electronic jamming pods or anti-stealth radar systems, these are not "plug-and-play" commodities. They require calibration, maintenance, and tactical integration. The most efficient way to ensure the equipment performs well (and thus provides better test data) is to have the people who built it there making the necessary adjustments. This is often framed as "technical support." Having their own professionals as "technical supporters" on the ground allows them to control the "test conditions." They can ensure the equipment is used correctly to generate the specific data they need, rather than being misused by a foreign army unfamiliar with its nuances.

They are likely operating under the guise of technicians, trainers, and military advisors. Their role would be to ensure the newly developed weapons are used optimally, to collect telemetry and combat data, and to prevent the Iranians from misusing the technology in a way that might compromise its secrets or provide flawed test results.

While this remains an assumption, it aligns perfectly with the historical behavior of superpowers treating client-state conflicts as live-fire laboratories.

Going back to the B-2 bomber case, theoretically, the advanced air defense systems of Russia and China are considered capable of intercepting the US B-2 stealth bomber. However, this is based on theoretical capability, and there is no publicly available combat record to confirm actual effectiveness.

The relevant surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems are;

Russia's S-400 and S-500- The S-400 is theoretically capable of detecting and engaging stealth targets, with the new 40N6 missile reportedly advertised as capable of countering the B-2; the S-500 is an upgraded system with even greater claimed capabilities.

China's HQ-9B (Hongqi-9B)- It has a range of up to 400 kilometers, with a speed of Mach 6, and can track low-speed targets in anti-stealth modes.

China's HQ-22 (Hongqi-22) - It works with the HQ-9B and other systems to form a layered air defense network.

China's HQ-20 (Hongqi-20)- It employs meter-wave radar and is specifically designed to counter stealth targets.

China's HQ-16 (Hongqi-16)- It handles medium- to short-range air defense and is a key component of the integrated system.

The Major Challenges of Interception of B-2 bombers

Stealth vs. Counter-Stealth Competition: The B-2 has an extremely small Radar Cross-Section (RCS), which can drastically shorten its detection range. While counter-stealth radars (like meter-wave radars such as JY-27A and YLC-8E) might attempt to detect it at hundreds of kilometers, detection does not equal stable targeting and successful interception. Intercepting a B-2 is far from a single missile's job. It requires an integrated joint operational network combining counter-stealth radars, AWACS, electronic warfare, and various SAM systems to work in coordination.

Unknown Combat Reality: To date, there is no publicly recorded instance of a B-2 being shot down by an air defense missile in actual combat.

In summary, while advanced air defense systems in China and Russia pose a significant theoretical threat to the B-2, this remains a complex, system-level contest, and actual effectiveness has yet to be verified in real combat.

Will this be a chance to verify the theoretical effectiveness in practice and, based on the results, recalibrate the weapons?

While history shows that wars become testing grounds for new weapons, the chance of Russia or China directly and deliberately testing their systems against US B-2 bombers over Iran is extremely low. The risks of direct military confrontation with the US are simply too high.

However, the chance of indirect and passive testing, gathering intelligence and analyzing B-2 performance, is very high. Here is the likely scenario:

Indirect & Passive Testing (Highly Likely): Both nations will closely monitor the conflict. This involves using their own intelligence assets (satellites, spy ships) to observe B-2 flight patterns, stealth signatures, and tactics, as well as analyzing US operational methods.

Tech & Intel Sharing (Plausible): Russia is believed to be providing material support and operational experience to Iran. The knowledge Russia gained from using its S-400 in Ukraine is being shared with Iran to help them adapt.

Iran as the "Proxy Tester" (Plausible): Iran operates Russian S-300 systems and is reportedly receiving S-400s. While largely ineffective against the B-2 so far, any engagement between Iranian systems and US bombers would still provide Russia and China with invaluable performance data.

In essence, Russia or China would be watching from the sidelines, using Iran as a real-world laboratory to learn how their systems might perform against the B-2.

I am not even mentioning the new missiles of North Korea and its possible testing of them in Iran.
