Ansar Allah, Not 'Houthi': A Correction and Why Language Matters in Ideological Warfare

I have to make a correction I made before, but out of habit fell into the same error again. I used the term "Houthi" when referring to the Yemeni resistance movement.

This was not a neutral mistake. It is a small but telling example of how deeply Western narratives penetrate our thinking — even when we consciously oppose them. I knew it was a Western label. I knew the proper name was Ansar Allah. But I used it anyway — out of habit, out of convenience, out of the subtle penetration of Western narratives into my own thinking.

This was a mistake. I correct it here publicly.

Ideological warfare operates not only through lies and distortion but through the language we absorb without thinking. Vigilance is required — not only against the enemy's arguments but against our own habits of speech.

The proper name is Ansar Allah (Partisans of God). The Western label "Houthi" reduces a broad movement to a single family — a common tactic to personalize and thereby delegitimize a resistance movement. It is the same tactic used when the Western media calls Palestinian resistance "terrorists" or labels any anti-imperialist force as "Iranian proxies.

It is worth knowing that the label "Houthi" is also used in the region — including by some Arab media and even by some Yemenis — not only by the West. But its origin and function remain the same: it names the movement after a family rather than by its own chosen name.

The movement emerged in the 1990s in Saada province, northern Yemen, as a Zaidi revivalist current. Its founder and first leader was Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi, a religious scholar and political figure who led the movement until his killing by Yemeni government forces in 2004. The family name "al-Houthi" comes from the Houthi tribe in northern Yemen, to which the family belongs. Western media took this family name and turned it into the label for the entire movement — "the Houthis." Naming delegitimizes the movement by association and suggests the movement is a narrow sectarian faction rather than a broad anti-imperialist front.  The name erases the nationalists, leftists, tribal militias, and anti-imperialist forces who make up the front, turning a national liberation struggle into a "family feud" or "tribal dispute"

Ansar Allah is a broad anti-imperialist front, not a monolithic sectarian group, which includes: Zaidi revivalists — the core, focused on religious revival and anti-corruption, Yemeni nationalists — opposed to foreign intervention and Saudi/UAE domination, Leftists and socialists — some Yemeni leftists have joined or allied with Ansar Allah against the Saudi-UAE coalition, Tribal militias — various northern tribes allied with Ansar Allah, Former military factions — Yemeni army units that sided with Ansar Allah, Anti-imperialist forces — those who see the war as a struggle against US-Saudi-UAE imperialism.

What unites them is not a single ideology but opposition to foreign intervention — the US-Saudi-UAE war against Yemen.

After taking Sanaa, Ansar Allah formed the Supreme Political Council in 2016. It governs northern Yemen. Its composition includes figures from various political backgrounds — not exclusively Ansar Allah members. It is a broad-based government of national salvation.

War

The Saudi-UAE coalition is armed, funded, and supported by the US and UK. The blockade has caused mass starvation. Ansar Allah's resistance is against this — it is objectively a revolutionary struggle, regardless of the ideology of its leadership. The criterion is not the ideology of the leadership but the character of the struggle against imperialism.

Western Narratives 

The narrative that  Ansar Allah is just an Iranian proxy is another false perception created by the West. Iran's support to Ansar Allah is limited and often exaggerated. Ansar Allah is a Yemeni movement with its own agenda — the struggle against Saudi-UAE-US intervention.

Ansar Allah is not solely made up of sectarians-Zaidis. They are a broad front. The Zaidi revival is one current, but the movement includes nationalists, leftists, and others.

Western narratives, while whitewashing their own human rights violations and genocides, either directly or indirectly speak of Ansar Allah’s human rights record. All movements in war, especially in the war of National liberation and anti-imperialist wars, have flaws. The question is: whose side are you on in the struggle against imperialism? Lenin's criterion is to appraise national movements by their results in the struggle against imperialism — "not in isolation, but on a world scale." As Stalin quotes Lenin; 

"Lenin was right in saying that the national movement of the oppressed countries should be appraised not from the point of view of formal democracy, but from the point of view of the actual results, as shown by the general balance sheet of the struggle against imperialism, that is to say, 'not in isolation, but on a world scale.'"

Language shapes perception. "Houthi" personalizes and delegitimizes the movement and its fight. "Ansar Allah" is the movement's own name. Using it is a small act of decolonizing our language — of refusing to let the enemy define the terms.
